You probably don’t like to think about the sewer system that serves your house. For the most part, you shouldn’t have to: sewer lines are built to last for years without problems. Because the sewer line lies in an underground trench, it isn’t often obvious at first that it has sustained damage from corrosion, tree root infestation, or blockages. There are warning signs to watch for that will tell you that it’s time to call licensed plumbers to inspect the sewer line and see if it needs repairs. Here are a few of them:

1.      Your toilet bowl water level is inconsistent:

One day your toilet bowl is full, the next day there is barely any water. It’s not just a curiosity, it is a sign of a problem. It could mean you have a clog in your sewer system that could potentially cause a backup.

2.      Odors from the drains:

Odors emanating from a single drain in your home usually means that the drain has a dried–up p–trap and only needs to have water run through it for a few minutes. But if these odors are coming from multiple drains around your home, it indicates a deeper issue in the plumbing system, possibly clogs or breaks in the sewer line.

3.      Slow or clogged drains:

Whenever your drains are taking a long time to empty, you should worry. Also be wary of drain-cleaning products, they will sometimes do more harm than good. Simply call your local plumber for a professional assessment.

4.      Gurgling noises from your pipes:

A strange gurgling noise when your bathtub drains or your toilet flushes is never a good sign. Don’t depend on a plunger to correct the issue, depend on your plumber for sewer line repair.

5.      Damp or foul smelling spots on the lawn:

If the sewer line starts to leak, it will leave unpleasant smelling patches on your property. If you notice such spots, call for professional plumbers right away. Anytime you smell sewage in your back yard. It means your sewer system needs work right away. That smell is not normal. 

The sewer line that collects the waste from around the various drains and toilets in your home runs in a trench underneath your lawns, gardens, and walkways. From the point where the sewer line exits your house, it is your responsibility to care for as the homeowner. Should something occur with the sewer line, such as decay from age, you must arrange with a professional plumbing contractor to repair or replace the line for you.
